Unveil The Mearns, the land of the great Scottish writer Lewis Grassic Gibbon and the setting of his classic novel Sunset Song.
The best seaside town in Scotland
Your tour begins with a visit to Stonehaven. From its beginnings as an Iron Age fishing village, Stonehaven has been voted the best seaside town in Scotland. Enjoy morning coffee at the picturesque Stonehaven harbour, once an important medieval trading port and even a haven for pirates. A short drive then takes you to Dunnottar, perhaps Scotland's most beautiful castle. Find out about the Scottish Crown Jewels and how they were removed from the castle which was being besieged by Oliver Cromwell's army.

The story of the Scottish Crown Jewels
Further down the coast, you will experience the stunning Fowlsheaugh nature reserve, which boasts over 100,000 breeding seabirds, including a Puffin or two, and marvel at the Crawton Burn waterfall as it cascades over the cliffs 60m into the Trolloch Inlet. Lunch will be served at the small fishing village of Catterline, before journeying to the historic Kinneff Old Church, where the story of the Scottish Crown Jewels continues - they were hidden under the floor of the church for eight years after being spirited away from the besieged Dunnottar Castle.

Producing Whisky since 1824
The tour then heads inland through the rich farming country of The Mearns, on to the Fettercairn Distillery. Whisky has been produced here since 1824, and you will have a chance to sample its delights. The tour then ends with an exquisite meal and entertainment at Fasque Castle, the family home of the British 19th century Prime-Minister William Gladstone.
